Hiking world was formed by Dig Bulmer in 1988.  We are not a large company but family owned and run.  Our home base is in our village in the Scottish Highlands, but as half our family now lives in California we are also based in America.

We have been guiding now for 22 years so we are getting the hang of it !  As a certified  International Mountain Leader my first 10 years were spent teaching winter climbing and leading trips to the Alps, Pyrenees,  Dolomites and New Zealand.   

Over the last 15 years our main areas of operation have become the East – Jordan (Where we have now led over 100 trips), Syria, Crete, Cyprus and increasingly Turkey – in fact “Provinces of the old “Ottoman Empire”.

One of my earliest memories was looking out of the porthole of an old British Troop ship tied to the dock in Port Said and seeing a camel walk by!  I was a child and fell in love with the east and have since sought every and any opportunity to return to the Middle East – the true cradle of civilization.

Hiking World trips are almost all led by me.  The purpose is to explore off the beaten track as well as discovering World Heritage Sites, places of historic interest and the people.  Islam, as found particularly in Jordan and Syria, is a positive and welcome addition to life and the kindness and generosity I have met with is testament to all that is best about faith.

We are small specialist outfitters who never lead more than 12 guests.  Twice a year I lead strenuous mountain trips, so I may still feel like a true guide, but increasingly take pleasure from more gentle hiking.  Exploring off the beaten path, sharing local knowledge we have gained over many years and introducing you to our friends in Aqaba, Damascus, Ghania, Aleppo, Kyrenia, Wadi Rum and all  points between

is great fun.   It’s been 22 years of guiding so far and it’s all thanks to people like you who make it possible!
