TOUR DATES  17 - 29 AUGUST 2009 MODERATE

"An inspired itinerary.  This trip was very different and we're happy to say fantastic."  Bobby & Norm Herbert, Birmingham, AL

"I was quite intrigued. Before me the great, sculptured archway stood stark against the blue sky of northern Jordan. Here, on the very edge of the Arabian desert, marking the entry to Jerash, one of the great Roman cities of the Decapolis, was an arch to commemorate the visit of Hadrian – Emperor of the Roman Empire. I was intrigued because several time zones to the west and as far north as Moscow was my home of Scotland where Hadrian had built almost 100 miles of wall to keep my forebears out of his empire" - Dig Bulmer.

In a time when the fastest way to travel was by horse, the Romans carved their empire from an area that covered all of Europe, most of North Africa and much of the Middle East and by air I had been transported from Hadrian’s Wall to Hadrian’s Archway!

Since the earliest of times, this rugged landscape has been a turbulent frontier territory out with the control of Kings. The Border country was a fierce land of men who were independent and free of the rule of law. The building of so many castles, keeps and walls were for centuries a matter of survival. Cattle rustlers of Americas Wild West were later able, in many cases, to trace their roots back to this land of legend.

During our hiking holiday we will discover the secrets of Cairnapple Hill, an ancient site of standing stones, visit Scotland’s oldest inhabited castle, see the death mask of Mary Queen of Scots, be amazed by the home of Sir Walter Scott and hike out over an estuary to Holy Isle – the first place in Britain to be attacked by the Vikings and of course we shall hike the best of the wall itself.
